GRINDER · BARATZA SETTE 270 · $300–400
The Sette 270 looks like lab equipment that wandered into a kitchen. Luckily the lab was studying espresso, so it is in the right room.
This is the step up from an entry grinder when espresso is the main event: timed dosing, fine stepless adjustment, and a holder that grinds straight into your portafilter. Our take is based on specs, Baratza’s manual, and price. We have not tested it.

- For
- Espresso-first people who want repeatable doses at the press of a button and finer adjustment than an entry grinder.
- Skip it if
- You mostly brew big batches of drip, you want a single-dose grinder, or the budget is really under $200.
- Price band
- $300–400 (check current price)

What you actually get
- 40mm conical burrs (Baratza calls them S1), 650 RPM.
- 31 macro steps plus a stepless micro adjustment ring for fine-tuning.
- Timer dosing with 0.1 sec resolution and three programmable presets.
- Grind speed of 2.9 g/sec at setting 8E up to 4.0 g/sec at setting 28.
- Adjustable portafilter arms that Baratza says fit most portafilter sizes.
- 300 g hopper, 120 g grounds bin. 13 x 25 x 41 cm. 1 year warranty.
Who it’s for
People who have figured out they like espresso and now want the grinder to stop being the variable. Baratza’s manual puts espresso around macro settings 3–9, then the micro ring does the fine work. Set a preset for your dose time and the grinder repeats it.
Who should skip it
- Big-batch drip households. Baratza’s manual designs it for short home grinding: up to 150 g per run with a rest, and up to about 2 lb a day.
- People who want a hopper-free, single-dose workflow.
- Anyone whose machine budget is already stretched. An Encore ESP plus good beans is a better deal than a Sette next to an empty wallet.
A timer is not luxury. It is the end of weighing every dose while half awake.

If you are pairing a grinder with a Gaggia Classic Pro, the Sette is the grinder that matches how fussy that machine lets you get.
Living with it
- Espresso duty cycle per Baratza: about 6 seconds of grinding, then about 60 seconds of rest. Fine for back-to-back home shots.
- Never wash the burrs. If you use it daily, brush them every few months or run grinder cleaning tablets.
- After the first few pounds, the finest setting may stop being fine enough. Baratza includes a washer that shifts the range finer.
- More on cleaning and burr removal: maintenance.
