Breville Barista Express

MACHINE · BREVILLE BARISTA EXPRESS · $500–700

A grinder and an espresso machine in one box, like a printer that also scans. Very convenient, right up until you want to upgrade only one half.

The Barista Express is the machine half the internet started on: a built-in conical burr grinder, a 54mm portafilter, a pressure gauge, and a manual steam wand. This page is based on specs, Breville’s manual, and price. We have not tested it ourselves.

We may earn a commission if you buy through our links, at no extra cost to you. How that works.

For

What you actually get

  • Integrated grinder with stainless steel conical burrs and 16 grind settings.
  • Half-pound (250 g) bean hopper, 2 L (67 fl oz) water tank.
  • 54mm portafilter with an integrated tamper.
  • 15 bar pump, low-pressure pre-infusion, 9 bar extraction.
  • Thermocoil heating with PID, an espresso pressure gauge, a manual steam wand, and a separate hot water outlet.
  • 22.09 lb. 15.9 x 13.1 x 12.4 in. 1 year limited warranty.

Who it’s for

Buyers who want the whole setup in one footprint and are fine with the grinder being “good enough for this machine” instead of “the grinder you keep for ten years.” The gauge is a real plus for learning: you can see when a shot is choking or gushing.

Who should skip it

  • Anyone with a decent grinder already. You would be paying for a second one.
  • People who want auto milk. The wand is manual, which is fine, but it is a skill.
  • Upgraders. When the built-in grinder becomes the bottleneck, you cannot swap it out. You buy a grinder anyway and the built-in one becomes a very heavy hopper.

Built-in grinders are convenient. They are also forever.

On paper, the separate setup gives you more grind settings in the espresso range and a grinder you can keep when the machine dies. The Barista Express gives you one box and a gauge. The full argument is in Barista Express vs a separate grinder.

Manual notes worth knowing

  • The upper burr is adjustable to shift the whole grind range if the 16 settings run out. Breville walks through it in the manual.
  • The water filter wants replacing about every 2 months.
  • There is a dedicated descale mode. Steps and timing are on our maintenance page.
  • Brew temperature can be nudged a few degrees up or down; the manual shows the button sequence.
