PAIRING · BARISTA EXPRESS VS A SEPARATE GRINDER · $500–700
Built-in grinder or separate grinder is the “should I get a combo washer-dryer” of espresso. Both work. Only one lets you replace the half that breaks.
The Breville Barista Express puts a conical burr grinder inside the machine. The alternative at a similar total is a Bambino Plus with a Baratza Encore ESP next to it. Our lean is the separate setup, because the grinder is the part you keep. But the Barista Express wins real points, and we will say where. All of this is based on specs, the manuals, and price, not our own testing.

- For
- People choosing their first setup and stuck between one box and two.
- Skip it if
- You already own a good espresso grinder. Then the answer is simply a machine without one, like the Bambino Plus.
- Price band
- $500–700 for the Barista Express, $600–700 for the separate pair (check current price)

Where the Barista Express wins
- One footprint, one plug, one box to unpack.
- A pressure gauge, which is a decent teacher when you are learning what a good shot looks like.
- A dedicated hot water outlet for Americanos.
- Often the lower total, depending on sales. Check current prices on both.
Where the separate grinder wins
- Upgrades. When you want a better machine, the grinder comes with you. When the built-in grinder stops being enough, you buy a grinder anyway.
- Espresso range. Twenty settings dedicated to espresso on the Encore ESP versus 16 total on the built-in.
- Milk. The Bambino Plus textures milk automatically.
- Warranty. Two years on the Bambino Plus versus one on the Barista Express.
Built-in grinders are like built-in printers. Fine until they are the reason you replace the whole thing.
Our call
If you are buying once and never upgrading, and counter space is tight, the Barista Express is a reasonable machine. If there is any chance you will catch the bug, buy the separate grinder now. That is the whole point of Grinder First.
